  • Loosening glued Floyd nut?

I tried to remove the Floyd nut on a guitar, only to find that it was glued in addition to the screws. How do I best loosen it?

Could I maybe heat it using a soldering iron?

    Suggestions highly appreciated!

Use a little block of wood or something and just tap it lightly with a hammer at the top right at the fretboard, and tap toward the headstock. It'll probably pop right off like a standard nut does. Depends on the glue they used though.

      Thanks Mark!

OK, that sounds like something I could try. The reason for removing it is that I want to shim the nut, so if there will be any remaning glue, I'd probably have to scrape/sand it off. If I'm not lucky enough to have all the glue pop right off the wood, and stick to the metal?

Use the easiest method first and try tapping like Mark said. If that doesn't work, you're on the right track by trying a little heat. Hide glue is a very popular glue in guitar repair, and it softens nicely with heat.

If there is glue residue use a razor blade and scrape it off don't try to get up under the dried glue just scrape from the top.
