  • Style and Technique ? 's

For you guys who are good enough to figure out how to play most of this stuff ( I AM NOT) here goes.

I'm gonna list a couple different players. I want to know what it is about them that makes them sound different and original.

Whether it be modes, or certain scales or what ever.

    Warren DiMartini-RATT
    George Lynch-Dokken
    Vivian Campbell- Dio
    Michael Sweet - Stryper

I love all those guitarist, and although Ratt is not my favorite band, I think that Warren has the most unique sound out of all of them.
Now Vivian is my favorit, and over the years , his stuff was the only one of them I could actually figure out and play, but not all of it. Why? I have no clue, so maybe you guys can helpme sort them out.

warren- fast pentatonics and had a habit of dropping notes from his scales (i do the same, shakes up your playing), became bluesier as time went on
lynch- wicked vibrato, eastern sounding note choices, also a very "fragmented" player, loved any exotic sounding scales he could wrap his fingers around (see fast run in kiss of death at end of solo)
vivian- lots of hopping back and forth between strings, extremely melodic
michael-heavy penchant for eastern sounding scales, more melodic than george, played a lot of those scales in their entirety, vibrato not as wild as george but still good...

most if not all of these players used 3 note per string scales (esp. when playing fast)
if you're interested in their approaches, keep checking into the harmonic minor scale as well trying to grab a book that has some eastern sounding scales in it...i did it the hard way by continuously pitting my fingers in all the wrong places til i found the scales...let your ears guide you...d.m.

      D.M. summed them up beautifully.

I've always thought that, at least in the early days, DiMartini and Lynch had a lot
of similarities in their playing. Ratt and Dokken were local rivals, and Juan Croucier played in both bands. I wonder
if George and Warren ever jammed together, or at least watched each other
play to pick up stuff from each other?

      Anyone else think so?
