  • Replacing a Schaller JT-590 with a JT-580LP

    Hi guys,

my buddy recently got a Charvel 750XL (the version with non-recessed Schaller trem).

He wants to replace the stock Schaller trem with the following one:

I believe it is a JT-580LP, is this correct? (the auction says it comes from an unplayed X-series Warrior, but doesn't tell if it is a new 2006 model or a prior version.)

And is it a direct replacement for the Schaller or will he have to get some mods done to make it fit?

    Thanks in advance!

oh, and btw: I just hit 1000 posts!

Yes it can be done without any mods, the question is why is he downgrading to a 580?

Wouldn't he need to route a little on the rear route to make room for the angled baseplate? Seems a little larger than the OFR/Schaller baseplate.

He wants a chrome trem, and he doesn't want to spend too much money, so getting a new Schaller is not an option (and finding a used one... well).

Apart from that, the Schaller is not in a good condition, though it still works.
He already swapped a totally corroded Schaller for a 580LP when he got his Rhoads Pro (and is totally happy with it), but the Rhoads Pro has a recessed trem route.

So my question basically is if there are any problems because the 750XL is NON-recessed.

Why doesn't he just swap the 580lp in his rhoads pro and try it if it works?

He'll need to get a 42mm block for the trem to make it work on the 750. Not sure if the 580LP takes a standard replacement block like you can find for the OFR or Schaller. If it does, then the one from the JT-590 will work.

Post some pics of the 750XL - I just got one Monday and love it.

IMO, these axes deserve the best - I'd pony up for an OFR (if you buddy could). What's his budget like? Have you looked on ebay for a used one?

Might be tough since you guys are outside of the states.

Replacing a 590 with a 580LP is like taking the big block out of your 69 Camaro, and replacing it with 4 banger.
                    Sleep!!, That's where I'm a viking!!

+1 000 000 !!! The 590 is a great trem, replacing it with a 580 simply because he's unhappy with the colour doesn't seem like a very good idea to me....? But whatever, it's his guitar... although you should try to talk him out of it, hehe!

Maybe I'll be interested into trade - chrome 580lp off my jackson rx10d for that schaller. But not know, when I get another guitar (in about two weeks maybe, can't wait!), cause I don't want to be guitarless.

As I said, the Schaller is in quite bad condition...

Besides, the feature he likes the most about the 580LP are the locking bolts sticking out of the top (did I describe that right? I'm a no-trem guy... ).

Thanks for all the info so far, it is very helpful and much appreciated!
