  • High Sitting Floyd

I asked this question before without aid of pictures and have never really gotten an answer. So, like many of you, I have multiple C/J guitars. However, two of them have Floyd's that sit higher than normal. One of my PC1's has this issue. The set up is fine. The action is great. But the Floyd just sits up kind of high. It cannot be lowered for the fact that the strings would then be sitting on the board. In othr words, the Floyd will not sit flush with the top of the guitar. It's difficult to see in the pictures but there is a small ridge of wood ( kind of like stairs ) where the bridge pins mount into the body. It's really not that big a deal but my question is...why? I may need a little help with the pics.

Wong tags my son.... You wack toetow concentwation! =)

Actually... you need to use the <img></img> tags and replace the greater than/less than tags with brackets. It changed since we moved to the new board.

I am not sure what you really could do about that. It appears that if you go any lower, you would bottom out on your PU's also. You could try shimming the neck at the front of the pocket and lowering all your hardware. But, I am not the smartest person in this area to answer this question. I am sure one of the other, way more experienced, persons on this board will come up with a better answer then that.

The neck seems to be up high in the neck pocket is that normal on the PC1.The fingerboard overhang should be closer to the body shouldnt it?Pull the neck and see if it has been shimed. That looks odd to me.
        Really? well screw Mark Twain.

The neck pocket was not routed deep enough.
If you are the original owner, send the thing back... now.
That is a piss poor QA job... the thing should have never left the factory looking like that.
The neck pocket needs to be almost an 1/8th inch deeper.

If you are not the original owner, there are a few guys here that can route this for you.

Thats what I thought but some one may have shimmed the neck. He needs to pull the neck to be sure. The side dots need to be just above the body line.

See =) I love this place. But, I think those Single rail pickups dont go any farther into the body they they are. He might need to have those rerouted also.

I agree w/ Richard. Check for a shim. It's possible that a previous owner (if it had one) set it up like that for some reason. Maybe they preferred the height of a non-recessed trem or something. Maybe they were just clueless, who knows?

I'll check this against my other two PC1's. The funny thing is I have a C/S NAMM Charvel that has the same exact issue. They play fine and the action is great. It's just that the Floyd sits a little high. Given that...if it were you, would you really send it back to Jackson? I think I might be asking for more trouble. This is my last special order guitar. I want to see the fuckker before I lay down money. I just bought a chlorine PC1 and it's perfect.

If I absolutly loved the guitar I would have the repairs/routing done its not that big a deal to me.Grant you Jackson should have done it right the first time.
Things like this is why Dave Mustaine fell out with Jackson, quality issues. His tech said Dave played the Jap import Jacksons during the last years with Jackson because the quality was better than the USA stuff they were sending him.

The neck pocket looks fine compared to my other ones. It almost looks like they did shim the neck to make up for that extra wood under the trem plate. The neck is sitting about 1/8 higher than the other two. I'm not sure what I want to do. Honestly, I am a lot less patient and understanding about this stuff than most. Knowing what some of you guys have gone through (Shawn) and are still going through, I probably would have been removed from the board for writing what I really thought about some of these issues. I'm just not sure this is worth the fight. Because if I start, I'm sure a few feathers will be ruffled. Maybe this thread should be in the "Ask Jackson" section.

Well, if it plays well and your action is fine, then I'd just leave it be. It's not really all that out of the normal for that on a Floyded guitar. The cavity is recessed, so you'll have plenty of room for pulling back if you so desire anyway.

I pulled the neck and there is no shim. The pups did have plenty of room to go down. So, the problem is the way the trem was mounted to the body and that small ridge of wood I mentioned. Other than that, it's fine. I'm going to put it back together and forget it. It could have been a much worse problem. I do appreciate the input and advice.

From the pics it looks like the neck pocket rout is the problem not the trem routing. The trem has plenty of room to be lowered. If you wish to get it fixed PM me and I'll put you in touch with a shop that can fix this for you.

Actually, when I put new strings back on the whole set up was f'd up. So , I'm taking it back to the dealer where I ordered it from and asking them to order a new one. Even if I have to wait, I'm going to get a new one. If they give me a hard time about it, I'll introduce them to my attorney. I'm just a little pissed now. I've been down this similar road before and it always works out. I wasn't going to make an issue of it until now. Thanks Straycat! I'll let you know.
