  • Knob Removal

I've got a Gibson Explorer with a loose volume knob. In order to tighten the connection, I must remove the knob. I've tried the trick of wrapping a cleaning cloth around the knob and pulling up. Didn't have success with that. Any other ideas?

Try sticking a spoon under the cloth to pry it up. Dental floss will also work, just wrap it around and pull.

I've heard of shoe laces as well.

uh careful! Maybe heat will help you if you still can't do it. Hold a hairdryer to the knob (not the paint) and heat it up a bit. A bit. Then pull.

I bought one of these long ago. Pulls knobs and stud inserts!

                1) Heat didn't work.
                2) The spoon as a pry tool didn't appeal to my better judgment.
                3) Couldn't wait for the "special" tool.
                4) Here's the solution. I took an old t-shirt and tore a 1/2 inch strip approximately 20 inches long. I slid the shirt around the post and wrapped twice, then tied a knot and wrapped twice the opposite direction. After tying another knot, I prayed to the guitar gods and jerked that fucker right off!

Yes, it was a variation of my first attempt, but two shots of Jim Beam Black helped produce a "bolder" outcome!

                    Shoe lace works for me.
