  • Neck pup suggestions for Rhoads

Instead of going with what i know, could you guys please broaden my mind a little and suggest a humbucker neck pickup for this Rhoads guitar:

    - soft maple body (i think)
    - rosewood fretboard
    - already has a SH-5 duncan custom in the bridge

No dark wooly bass-heavy fat Santana tone for me.
No EMG (got one gtr with that already).
No Humbucker From Hell (got one already).
Got to be available in white.
Would like it to perform well when split.

    All suggestions appreciated, thanks.

I was going to say Duncan 59 but I have one in my ESP H-1000 and its fat as all hell. I also have one in my Washburn Nuno N2 and its also super fat.
It sounds fantastic clean though and it coil taps really well. A Carvin C22N would be a great choice if you could get over the look of it. It sounds beautiful tapped too.

jg, when you say "Paf", you mean the DiMarzio Paf plain jane (DP103)?

While I do think the Duncan '59 is very good in the neck in just about any guitar, it can be a little too warm and fat, muddy at times. I'd go for a brighter pup like the Jazz (SH-2).

                Yes.
The Duncan Jazz would be another good one. You might even think about putting a Pearly Gates in the neck.

                    +1

That's why we use it as the "stock" neck pickup in the Jackson USA Select and Charvel USA Standard models.

                      But i don't play JAZZ!

Man, i think i'm losing it. I have an RR1 but i can't remember if i changed its stock pups!?! It hasn't been out of its case in almost two years so that kinda explains it. As i recall, a 1997 RR1 is born with a jazz in the neck, right?

Jesus, maybe i need water or something...

you don't have to play jazz, silly boy. and yes, they've been the stock neck pickup for a lonnnnnnnnng (from the beginning) time.

The Seymour Duncan Jazz model; Randy used 'em, why don't you?

Man, I really do not dig the Jazz at all. It's nasal, tinny and weak, IMHO. Some of you guys may think the '59 is fat/muddy/whatever but - to me - it is the best SD humbucker for the neck position. And I pretty much only use neck PUs for clean tones. IMHO, the '59 has a broad clear tone, with a nice sweet mid-range. You opinion may vary.
