  • Painting an oiled body

If a guitar body has been oiled, are there any issues with painting it, in terms of the paint taking to, or reacting with the oil?

Good question. I know for a fact that you can paint over a Danish Oiled wood 72 hours after it has been oiled. Right now I'm painting over an oiled mahagony and I don't know what type of oil was used. The grain filler and primer/ sealer seem to be adhering fine so far. I think with a good wipe down of Naptha you should be fine IMO.

Wiping it down with Naptha or Mineral Spirits (as you would to prep it regardless) will get off residual hand oils, etc. Use a good grain fill and primer, then you should be good to go.

depending on the type of wood, a filler and primer should be put on first
