Spalted Maple & Trans. Finishes - Would it work?

I've only ever seen spalted maple in natural. Has anyone ever tried doing it with a transparent stain or dye finish? I think this might look cool. Not sure it'd even work, though. [img]/images/graemlins/scratchhead.gif[/img]

I've had bad luck staining some of my woodworking projects using spalted wood. I'm sure the pros are better then me though.

From what I've read, spalted maple is very soft to the touch (like velvet) and pourous, and would not yield well towards rubbing stains onto it.

It can be dyed. You need to stabilize that stuff before using. It's super soft.

I thought there was a Custom Shop Jackson at NAMM that had a reddish/orange spalted top, from what I remember.

I've seen a BC Rich that had an orange dyed spalt top. Looked killer too.

Sully just did a blue trans finish using only tinted clear. I'll bet that would work great on spalt.

rondomusic has agiles with tobacco burst spalted and wine red spalted.

the main reason that spalt is left natural is b/c of the different colors that's usually found in spalted maple. it would depend on the top, but you probably wouldn't have an even color to it.

Both off those pics are cool. Seems to reduce the highlighting of the spalt figuring, though. Hmmm.

I would think they used a tinted clear on that red one to get away from dying the wood and have to many color changes going on.
