Adding a cap/resistor to a single volume guitar

I've got a single volume guitar that sounds kinda "muddy".
As opposed to swapping pickups, I thought I'd experiment by adding a cap/resistor to the volume control. I've heard of people doing this before, but my concern with doing this mod would be the variation in tone when adjusting the volume. Has anyone done any mods like this before? If so, was this the case? Would a push/pull volume/tone control be a better option? What are your thoughts?

Also, any information on suggested resistor/cap ratings, wiring diagrams or resources for this type of mod would be greatly appreciated. [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

Adding a cap to your volume control will turn it into a tone control. Some guys install very small caps on the volume control as volume bleeds but this only effects the tone when you are rolling the volume down (it retains a little of the brightness) but on the downside, many times the volume control will not turn fully off.
The best ways to decrease the mud on your guitar are:

Install a 1 meg ohm no load pot or try a different pickup.
