  • Removing pre-amp from RR1 - J80s

My RR1 hums very loudly, and I've decided to remove the pre-amp from the circuit to see if it makes any difference. The pickups are the stock J80s. Will these things sound any good without the pre-amp?

My 1992 comes with a J80 and a J90C. Are you sure both are J80's?

I think it would sound fine with the J80's, but I've only heard J90C without a preamp. I like the passive J90C a lot.

My RR1 is kinda noisy as well. That's where EMG's have an edge - they shield the preamp and pickups together, so that when the signal leaves the pickup, it's already hot.

I like the tone of my active Jackson - I may shield the cavity.

    Good luck with yours.

Yeah, they are both J80s, and this isn't just noisy, it's really fucking bad.
