View Full Version : Frets problem

Hi, everyone!

I got this issue I wasn't aware of it before.
I restrung my guitar today and meanwhile I did a bit of cleaning and stuff. I noticed that frets have "brass" surface, which is cracked on parts. It surely is some kind of "cover" and not sweat. I tried to remove it from one fret and it comes off in big chunks.

What's that? The crowns are chrome, but the sides are kind of yellow. Can it be the neck lacquer? If it is, is it bad for the rest of it on the fretboard? It's getting off by time, that's for sure. I'm just afraid that chucks will make cracks on the visible parts of the fretboard.

Here's the pic (warning - large):

Absolutely normal... maple fretboards are laquered and then the fretys are dressed.... what you have there are just lacquer chips....

if you want to get rid of them yoiu can score the laquer around the fret w/ a razor blade.... but whether you do or not, you shouldn´t have problems.

yes, it's clear coat. normal with maple necks. i'd leave it, but if you want to get rid of it, score along side the frets and scrape it off.
