  • Advice on controls to add to an EMG PJ set

Not a bass player per se, but will use for recording, and maybe expanding into more later.

Have an EMG PJ-set which has 2 vol and one master tone.
Not going into a jackson bass tho, but a Kramer era Spector NS2A.

So I have the need to add one additional control and don't know what is appropriate.

Thought about the EXB (an equalization control for bass that increases the low and high frequency regions while reducing the midrange simultaneously to provide the gain and punch )

    Sounds cool and flexible.
Not looking for eccentric or advanced control, just simple, or complimentary. Metal/Hard Rock, hell maybe more mainstream rock.

    Ideas/Suggestions?

From my experience I would recommend checking out the EMG BTS and BQS Systems. Had one with a semi-parametric middle EQ (on a stacked pot), it was very handy for digging up some of that middle punch. Worked great for heavier music.

I've got a couple basses w/ emgs, one has the expander, the other has the stacked bass and treble control, and I would add the stacked bass/treble for sure over the expander. The exb adds too much highs along w/ the lows, and the btc will pretty much do what the expander does. One of my favorite settings is to just go to the bridge pup, add some bass and I get a lot of added growl. I think it would just replace your existing tone and you wouldn't have to drill any holes.

Contrary to popular belief, you can use EMGs with preamps from other manufacturers as well.

that said, i would go for a stacked mid boost, level + frequency.

If it's going into the Spector you shoud be able to just wire the pickups up and use the control that came with the bass. The stock pickups in there were cheap copys of EMG's and low impedance.
