Re: Differences Between Alder and Mahogany

Fretboards are typically not made of either mahogany or alder (they aren't hard enough to make good fretboards). Did you mean rosewood and maple?

they don't make necks out of alder; usually maple or mahogany.

maple is a tighter grained wood and sounds a little brighter, mahogany is pretty porous and a bit warmer/darker sounding. most les pauls are mahogany body and neck, but have a maple cap on the body to brighten the tone a bit.

heh, not unlike maple vs mahogany!

ebony: tight grain, warm tone with a bit of bite.

rosewood: slightly porous, warmer tone than ebony or maple.

They sure do make necks out of alder. Check out the Carvin Holdsworth model... it's standard with an alder neck, as per Alan's request. Carvin will also make any of their models with an alder neck if you so desire.
