• Duncan Custom 5 and Cool Rail with basswood body

Do you think this combo will sound good for metal and shred type music? Will it sound too bright? How about having enough low end response and clear articulation?

Don't know, but let me know.

I am putting together a Charvel Fusion Deluxe with a basswood body. Just got it up and running last night with an L500XL (don't have a single yet). I'm not sure if I liked it - I didn't get to mess with it too much last night.

I'd love to know what this guitar came with originally.

Thats what I have in this, but mine's an alder body Sounds terrific in alder! No idea what it will be like in Basswood...try it! A Custom 5 is an easy sell.

Cool rails are very nice in the neck position of any guitar

Could they also be used in the middle position?

Re: Duncan Custom 5 and Cool Rail with basswood body

i'd go with either a duncan distortion or a bill lawrence 500xl in a basswood body with a rosewood neck.

the custom 5 sounds great in alder, but its not going to sound as good in a basswood.

The neck on my guitar has a maple fingerboard. It currently has a Dimarzio Super Distortion and I find it "dull sounding", very uninspiring.

Yeah...that's the Basswood's contribution you're hearing.
Maybe a Duncan Custom...that should have the top end sparkle to off-set the dull-ness of Basswood.

here is what the duncan tone wizard has to say for locking trems.

body: mohagany | alder | poplar | basswood
fretboard:
maple: tb-5/tb-14 |tb-11/tb-4 | tb-11 | tb-14
rosewood: tb-12 | tb-14 | tb-13 | tb-6
ebony: tb-4 | tb-4/tb-11 | tb-11 | tb-14

I found out this guitar originally came with a J90C (bright) and a Jackson hot rails neck. After playing with the Bill Lawrence L500XL last night, I think it's a great choice. Very Judas Priest. Now I need to score a neck pickup.

I have an EMG81 as well, and I may drop that in to see how it sounds. If it sounds good, I'll get an SA for the neck.

I also have a full shred which sounds like it may be a good choice as well.

BTW My Charvel Fusion Deluxe was just a body (bought on ebay), and I bolted up a Jackson Fusion Professional (ebony with MOP sharkies) up to it, so it's brighter than the rosewood necks.
