  • Floyd nut on a Model neck experiment

After seeing so many posts about installing a Floyd nut on a model series neck and my own curiosity, I decided to give this a try. I had an old model neck laying around that was sort of guinea pig so I used it.

First I found some maple to use that was part of an old tv tray as material for the mounting shelf. Then I used my mitre saw to cut a piece at 15 degrees. Then it was trimmed down to the size of the nut with an exacto knife. I sanded the surface of the headstock where it was to be mounted then glued and clamped it in place.

After it was dry, I painted the piece with black lacquer hobby paint and the mounted the nut with shims from Stew-Mac to achieve the proper height. I recommend mounting it from the top instead of drilling through the neck which is the way I did it and though it doesn't look that bad, it's bad enough, but that's due to my haste in completing the project.

Here are a few pics of the finished product. I had to use a chrome nut since that was all I had that was an R4.

nice work! My Model 2 had a Floyd nut already installed when I bought it, might have to have a closer look at how they did it.

Your right Dave, my Model 2 is next since I just put a real Floyd on it.

              Great work!

What size nut would I need for my Model 6 neck?

I wanna try one for myself!

Model 6 would need an R3, it's a 1 11/16 nut like an R4 but with slightly narrower string spacing so the strings stay within the binding.
