• fret word... dressing and refretting

I would like to get good at fret work. Anyone here ever done it? What would you suggest for tools?

Start out by practicing on a beater. I use a 10" bastard mill file, a set of needle files for fret ends, and a sanding block with various grades of sandpaper. Then I finish off with a metal polish like Brasso or Gleem.

Dude, invest the extra money for the stew mac stuff. its great stuff.
If you need an extra neck to practice on, I have a few beaters I used to practice and will be happy to send one over for you to practice on.
I will need it back tho as I have spent a good 10 years collecting necks for this.
All i ask is you cover the shipping to and from.
Let me know..
Then when I get it back, i can also check your work and tell you what you need to work on.
Its up to you but Im here to help.

The first thing you should do is get Dan Erlewine's Fret Basics video and or his book Fretwork Step by Step at Stewmac. I recommend the DVD. Watch it first and you'll know what tools you need depending on what you want to do - whether it's just leveling and dressing frets or doing a complete refret. Stewmac also has a great selection of fretting tools, including a starter set, which is about $150 with the book included.

"Fretwork Step by Step"

This is a great book for begginers.

I'm too much of a cheapass. But I do plan on getting the book. Maybe I'll get the proper tools later on.
