• Do EMG `s have to be grounded?

The site says no, while others say yes....confusing.

Zerb, just so I understand completely...you dont have the ground soldered to the claw spring?

you could ground them if you want but it would really make a difference. i wouldn't bother, thats how people end up getting shocked so why do it if there is no need.

Is it possible on a 3 single coil config...that it would be setup as 2 volume controls and 1 tone control? just tryin to figure this mess out. thanx fellas.

Yes, you should be able to wire it that way. See if EMG has any wiring diagrams for that way on their site, or email them and Rick will let you know.

The only mystery left, is this single black wire coming from the middle pot....Ive looked at every emg schematic possible and still cant figure out what its there for. thanx guys for the grounding advice. much appreciated.

another ?...if there are 2 volume pots, could the black and white wires from the input jack be wired to 1 volume pot each i.e. white to first vol. pot and black to second vol.pot?

Correct. I still have the shielded cavities and such, but I remove the wire to the claw or tailpiece.

Re: Do EMG `s have to be grounded?

OK, there's a problem here with what "grounded" means. EMG recommends that you not ground the strings to the common ground. This is normally achieved when a wire from the tremolo or bridge is connected to the common ground. However, you must ground the shield wire from each pickup to a common ground. Otherwise the EMG pickup will not produce output.

all they mean is the bridge/string ground should not be connected to the common ground of the pickups/controls.

I have asked before, but where do you ground EMG's?

To a common ground, normally the back of a volume pot. Can be a tone pot, or as on some Jackson guitars, there is a piece of metal screwed into the cavity where all the ground wires feed into a common spot on the volume pot.
