• Found an unusual Professional

well, at least I think it's unusual

dropped into this little hole-in-the-wall pawn shop today. I don't normally go in there because they rarely have anything of interest, having so little room for stock, but decided to go in on a whim this afternoon.

They had a Kramer Striker in the window for AU$650!! so I was prepared for the worst when I went inside.

But what I found pleasantly surprised me. Which is why I'm here.

They had hanging on the wall, a bolt-on Jackson Professional bass. 2-a-side headstock, like you find on the current Concert basses. Actually the body shape was similar to the C-series too, except the rear bout of the guitar was different. It has a kind of "bite" out of it, like this: http://www.bunnybass.com/mia/04_arch...ne_sig6_up.jpg

It appears to have a thin satin finish (or possibly oiled) over a veneered body. Dark meat in the middle of the sandwich, with lighter slices front and back.

2 big-arse Jackson pickups, much wider than J-pickups. They didn't seem as big as a humbucker, but I'm not real familiar with bass pickups.

Don't know if any of this helps at all, but I was wondering if anyone can identify it?

I was tempted to pick it up, it seemed like a nice instrument for the money. But I didn't want to find out that it's an entry-level POS that retailed for more than what the pawn shop is asking.

Sounds very odd to me. Maybe someone went to a lot of trouble to fake a Jackson bass?

yea, possibly. Or they've used the hardware & neck off a Jackson C4 (or similar) and built a body to suit. The neck join looks a perfect fit though, so it doesn't look like some kids has hacked up the body in his bedroom.

        Is it something like this?

Thats a Japanese Jackson that they produced in the late 80's early 90s I think.

huh, yes it is! Nice work, thor. Although one I found didn't have a burst finish.

Thor - Jackson imports didn't start till 1990, and this particular model didn't make it until the late 90s. Everything prior to that was styled after the original 80s designs.

wow, that one has maple top, maple back & sides, maple fretboard. I wonder what deck stain they used to get that lovely "brown" colour?

nice job tracking that one down, Newc. I had searched on Ebay, as well as in Google (any idea how many bass players are named Jackson? :grin) but with no luck.

The US$799 price tag on that makes the AU$580 on the one here seem very reasonable. But since my car blew a head gasket on Monday, it's out of the question now anyway.

Thanks for the heads up on the date. My memory failed me here. I didn't think it was that new.
