• Faux Ebony Guitar

Another one of my dumb ideas out loud!!!!!

Anyone ever ebonize an entire guitar? I am thinking of doing this with the stuff from Stew Mac on a Model 5 project I have on going..... Clear coating over it and doing the front with a piece of quilted or flamed laminated maple in an undecided color.

    Is this a stupid idea?

How do you think that would look?

How do you think the dye would hold old up?

    Thanks for your input.

As someone who has used the Stew-Mac stuff for ebonizing rosewood fingerboards for many years, and as someone who has a Les Paul Voodoo, I think ebonizing the body would look like my voodoo does: LP Voodoo website

If a clear coat will stick over it, it should last almost indefinitely, but isn't that stuff kind of oily? Will a clear coat work on that?

Good point etaeniura, clear coating over the oil dye probably won't work well. You could apply a couple of coats of tung oil though. That would probably look cool, and give a nice sealed finish.

that would have more of a matte finish though, right?

Mark/Andy, I'm not sure I understand, wouldn't this be like putting polyurethane over any oil-based wood stain? I've worked with wood quite a bit (insert punn here ) and have never had any problems putting a hard, durable glossy clearcoat over an oil based stain. Possibly I'm missing something that this fretboard stain has in the ingredients? Teach me!
