  • question on neck finish

I'm looking at what looks and feels like an oiled one piece maple neck about 20 years old. When I look at the fretboard, where the strings have NOT touched the fretboard vs. where they have (for 20 years), it looks like there's the thinnest of satiny/glossy type finish. You can't tell from head on, but looking at it from an good angle you can see the reflective characteristics of what wasn't rubbed off. Anyone know what type of finish this is?

I've never used linseed oil on a guitar neck, but I have used it on old windows and I it hardens to a shine...I wonder if that's it.
