Finish on headstocks

I noticed on my KE3 neck that got scrapped, the impact had made the black color on the headstock to chip off under where the logo is. I'm just wondering, is this a piece of plastic that they glue on the headstock, or is it painted on... ? from these marks it looks like it could be either.

They should be plastic caps.
