• Question about P90' to Regular humbuckers and Kah

lers.

Okay, I see this SG with P90's and i'm wondering if there is any differnt string spaceing between a guitar made for p90's or regular humbuckers.

my next question is, if you have a SG, and it has a kahler installed on it afterwards, if you remove that kahler, will there be the 2 holes that are used for the stop tail bar in most cases?

like this one.

spacing should be the same, but the size of the rout is different. if you're thinking of putting hums where p90s once were, you may want to think again.

as far as the tom/kahler mod, the old holes may be there, esp if the kahler is the stud mount type.

If you want to go with hums, EMG now makes 81s and 85s in a P-90 size housing. Dimarzio and Seymour Duncan also make P-90 size humbuckers now.

well i know the routing would be different, but since there is a pick guard there it should be no problem right?

thanks for the info so far.

DiMarzio also makes some P-90 sized humbuckers like the Super Distortion and Tone Zone, if I am not mistaken.

Unless the flat-mount Kahler is the fixed-bridge type as found on the Mustaine sig King V, it'll require some routing underneath the bridge that is needed for the cam to operate correctly. So if you remove it afterward, they'll be a chunk o wood missing there.

Re: Question about P90\' to Regular humbuckers and

The route will look very similar to a combo of the SG and the explorer. If you pull the bridge/tailpiece and install a Kahler flat mount. The route for the cam and block will probably be a little smaller in width than the explorer route tho.

Duncan offers a nice mini humbucker similar to ones found on Gibson LP deluxes called the SM-2 and SM-3 which should be interchangeable to the p-90. Nice pups.
Rio Grande offers the Fat bastard if you want to put a p-90 single into a humbucker route and Gibson has the P94.

Thanks for the pickup suggestions

Ok so i'm a bit confused, Can i get a tunomatic/stop tail piece put in instead of a kahler? i would try to restore it (adding a block of wood where it would be missing)

I just want it to look like a regular sg, no kahler.

Are those 2 big holes that are left on the guitar for a stop tail piece only like on some gibson's? or is there screws that big for tuneomatics to fit there?

Thanks

and while we're levelling with you....

you gotta stop the insanity. get yourself a new(er) guitar that isn't hacked to hell and needing more work than you're more than likely to get to. i know you've had some bad experiences with buying parts off of ebay, but if you weren't going to fix that kelly body that had the crack in the floyd post hole (which can be a pretty easy fix, btw), it's not a good idea to grab something that you've got to mod so much to get to your liking.

please don't take this as putting you down, but you've spent months here lookin at stuff on ebay and kicking tires.

i know you're into the sg shape; go get one of the faded ones, and take some 0000 steel wool to the back of the neck. that way it'll feel a bit more broken in (i know that was somethin you were lookin for). the time you've spent on looking for ebay parts gold could have been spent playin a new guitar.

either way, we're still here to help.

Yes I suppose your right but i think i could get it for cheap. I figured this would be easy, just getting a tuneomatic and stop tail, getting it installed.

I know i could get one of those worn sg's but i don't know...

It would be easier to covert from a Kahler to a TOM bridge if the Kahler was the kind that mounts on the studs of both the bridge and tailpiece. There would still be a hole for the cam but the hole wouldn't be as big as the normal Kahler flatmount. This is probably the kind that the Explorer in your link had. The Kahler itself looks like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW
It's easy to distinguish it due to the end that wraps around the stop tailpiece.

That first photo is one of a regular Kahler which won't have any TOM studs. Well, that one is a bit peculiar cos it originally had the wrap-around tailpiece. Good luck with what you go with!

Some very good deals, most come with case.

If you wait and shop daily taking some time to find some desperate soul who needs money and wants to make a quick deal with a low BIN, you can find a steal. There are quite a few out there.

This is the SG 90, they only made them for a one or two years. They have the same split inlay as the current SG supreme.. nice USA SG, and it is off the beaten path. There was two of these on Ebay in the last month and sold for about 500 range.

BTW, I'm assuming that bridge is metric since the guy is listing it for a copy, it probably won't fit on USA..but, I did not read the listing that closely.

While you can put a mahagony block in there and fill it over, it'll take some work to refin. A Gibby bridge and tailpiece could probably be bought for less than 60.00 if you shop about.

This was good price on a faded!
