Putting a gloss finish on a raw/oiled maple neck

Good idea? Bad idea?

If the neck is oiled will an oil based clear gloss be ok? Or do I need to sand down to raw wood?

Any and all advice and personal stories welcome here.

I'm pretty sure this is a Yes. Oil would keep the paint from bonding to the wood.
