  • Sully Guitars collaboration with Grover Jackson!

Over the years, I've used Grover's Habanero pickups almost exclusively, and we've developed a friendship. In April, I made the decision to create a small dealer network (so far, three in the US and two in AUS) and supply the dealers mainly with guitars that I will build with Grover.

WITH GROVER! Yes, it's like going to work with Santa.

I'm elated that the first batch will be '71 Trellas. They will be available in solid colors and figured tops with trans finishes. I'll be sure to take as many photos as humanly possible, as well as video if I'm able. Guitars should be complete by late September/mid October and hitting dealers shortly thereafter.

The first batch of guitars are expected to begin in mid-July; I will fly out to Grover's shop and go through the woodworking/fretting/sanding phase and fly home while they paint them. When the paint work is complete, they will be shipped to me, and I'll handle assembly, wiring, final fretwork, and setup. Then they'll go out to the dealers with some extras to commemorate the collaboration.

Here's a pic of Grover and I with the '71 Trella prototype:

The inlays on the production batch will be hollow blocks, and there will be a tone knob added.

Here's Grover with a '71 Limited; the neck on this one will be the model for the production models.

I'm sure you can imagine how excited I am to begin this process, and I can't wait to get these guitars in your hands!

Here are some photos from when I was at Grover's shop last week. We're making a little over 20 guitars in this batch, and here are some photos of the beginning steps.

              Alder test body bandsawed!

Body trimmed, index holes and wire channels cut in

              Plain maple top on:

              Top carved, pickup cavities started:

Two test bodies mostly cut, body and neck blanks in the background.

              Gluing up neck blanks

              Neck blanks in the clamps

              HEADLESS! (yes, I'm kidding)

              Binding and inlays party!

              Getting the end piece flush

              First batch bound

              Fitting inlays

              Test neck #1

              Test necks

              Determining neck angle and reveal

To all of my students who sanded as I watched and cracked jokes, this one's for you. Yes, I'm actually enjoying myself!

              The two test guitars

              With Mr. J.

              More to come!

The test guitars are staying with me. The good news is that 15 of them will be available, with some really cool specs!
