  • Reinforcing Floyd Rose Bushings

    Hi folks!

For the second time in it's lifetime, my MIJ HRR (hot rod reissue) Strat has had the wood crack where the bushings are for the Floyd. Last time it got re-routed with a piece of Ash and it still happened (I am not a wild man on the bar either).

How do you guys get around this? I have seen some Washburn's with a metal plate on the top to reinforce, and I have seen as much as people making full on brass blocks! My initial thought is to simply leave more wood, and get a new pick-guard where i can move the humbucker a couple mm towards the neck.

It is my favourite playing guitar, and it's a real shame it sits unstrung and unplayed for so long as I can't afford to fork over for repairs all the time.

    Thoughts?

    Use a reinforced stud plate.

i concur with the above post...this was a problem i discussed with jackson years ago...one workaround we came up with (i'm one of the few that actually likes the tone of basswood bodies) was to redrill a bigger stud hole and inset hard rock maple dowels which is a much harder wood, then redrill for the studs...sadly we never got around to trying it...even cutting out the afflicted piece and inserting maple (or even ebony) could potentially work...but the plate above (i have similar ones on a few ibanezes) really seems to work well without the hassle of serious woodwork...d.m.

The JT6 bushings are much larger and spread the load better, especially needed for basswood.

Ya learn something new every day. In 34 years of playing Floyded guitars, I've never had/seen this problem. Admittedly, I've only owned one or two basswood guitars, the remaining being either mahogany or alder. And I have never been gentle with my Floyds but I don't abuse them either.

            Thank You RJohnstone!

Vector - It's really more of a design flaw with some manufacturers, I have 6 Floyded guitars and this is the only one it has happened to. Even with the Ash...Going to rip it back open soon and hopefully I can get away with just the plate...if not looks like I'll be doing another insert then having the plate on this time.

Further question...I see the spacing on these is 74.5mm, and my OFR is 73.9. How much troubles will I have?
