  • What's on the bench

    8/30-9/12:

I've got a bunch going on, but here are some highlights:

I had a 1:1 build class, and my student built this in six days.

Since it was a 7 day class, I put her to work on day 7. Hooray for binding scraping monkeys!

Carved top '71 #1 in clamps.

And getting the heel contoured out. Because clunky heels are for jerks.

This quilt topped '71 over limba body and neck...

    ...wait, what?

Then there's this one....spanish cedar body and a koa top. It has 2ply tort/white binding on the body, neck, and fretboard (once I get the fretboard inlays done)

And after a visit from our friend Mr. Naphtha....

Here's a 1pc black limba chambered '71 with a figured Myrtle top. Neck is 3 pc very lightweight limba, tort binding, and will have a bois de rose fretboard with hollow block inlays.

This spalted maple topped '71 was sent off to get the rest of the finish done...

This quilt topped, floyded '71 is currently with Stike @ Rowyco Kustoms...

    ....as is this Galaxy V....

There's a bunch more, but that's more than enough for now, eh?

Cool I like the blue quilt and the unpainted (oiled?) Galaxy neck.

I like your sculpted neck heel. I do like big ass blocky heels on bolties, though. Those provide some serious coupling and make you work for your high notes. Those cut down heels and cutesy angled plates just won't do. Maybe I AM a jerk. Or just a blockhead?

Thanks man! Yes, the Galaxy V in the pic calls for an oiled neck, so it's taped off. Bolt ons will always be a little blockier, but I'm looking forward to moving to threaded inserts for extra strength and coupling. With that added, I may be able to sculpt them out more than I normally do.

If you haven't already, go to the website (www.sullyguitars.com) and sign up for the mailing list. 2016 class dates will be announced later this year, and the mailing list always gets first crack at stuff.

I won't put one on a Sully, that's for sure. However, if a student wants one, well.....

                          9/12 - 10/6

I've got another class coming up on the 18th, so I need to get all of my '71 work (as well as a few others) done and off for finishing very quickly. So, here we go!

Quilt top over limba '71 had the neck glued in; here it is with the carved top:

GoPro attached (I'm filming the build process of 4-5 of them) and I initially start here to blend the heel and contour the cutaway

The heel/cutaway contouring process moves to the vise

                          Done and final sanded

                          Spanish cedar/koa '71:

                          Neck shapery

                          Neck glued in.

                          Heel blending/cutaway contouring process

                          Final sanded

Oh...and I made a matching truss rod cover.

                          Myrtle top/chambered 1pc black limba body '71

Bois de Rose fretboard inlaid, board sanded, and time to clean out the slots. Jesus, this stuff is brittle. Pretty, but brittle.

                          Cleaned up

Fun with binding. I always wonder why I do this....

And then I remember "because it looks awesome when it's done!"

                          Stainless frets in

                          Neck glued in

Spanish cedar '71 w/quilt top and headplate

Not too far along on this one just yet, but it's as of this point unclaimed and will get a floyd.

Top joined and screwed to blank

                            Get in the bag!

                            ooh, pretty!

Neck blank cut and it's a nice fit. Good times!

                            Spanish cedar 624T

This one is just about ready for paint; it'll get lime green flake on the face of the body, black back and sides. Good times.

                            Neck shapery.

Looks like we have some slight figure in the ebony. Sweet!

Finally for now, here's some sparkle:

Michael Schenker/Randy Rhoads inspired paint job:

Elita #3/5 just about ready to go off to paint:

Red flake 624 body back from paint:

'71 back from paint. Love this one; it's got an angel step quilt top with a blue burst around the bottom 1/2 and a very slight horizontal (vertical?) fade. This is one of the first batches of guitars to have the new chrome logos, and I'm super excited with how they came out!

As of this moment, it's mostly assembled and wired up; I've just got a couple of tweaks and it's ready to ship.
