  • Completed - Neck thru Raven

Here's some pics of a neck through Raven. I'm also filming the progress so you can follow along. Try to contain your excitement....

Basic specs are black limba body and neck, ebony fretboard, spalted maple all over the place, 24 frets, two hums, wraparound. Here ya go:

Took a trip to Dallas Makerspace to use their 12" jointer with a spiral head cutter and used that to get the blanks, wings, headstock and neck angles done. Love that thing right in its face!

    Headstock bound

    Wings on

Blue glow powder + CA glue

    Get in the bag!

    Out of the bag

I had some leftover spalt cutoffs, so I bookmatched them as best as possible and used it for the raised center block on the back. Huge pain in the ass. Dunno that I'd do that again.

Spalt on the back of the headstock

As it is now, I've got to final sand it and get it out of here for finishing. It's going to have a light trans blue finish on the back/sides, and the lowered wings on the face. Not necessarily what I'd choose, but hey, it's not my guitar.

Here's some video of the process:

That looks really nice. For the spalted on the back, you could have just used it for the control cavity covers. The limba is interesting enough to look at anyways.

Also, since I work for a safety organization, make sure you are wearing breathing protection when working with that spalted maple. I believe the dust can release spores. We want you building guitars for a long time!

Oh yes. I wear my respirator most of the day.

Wow. I can't say enough good things about that top/colour.
