I have had success removing paint marker with a citrus-based cleaner.
            A Charvel CX592, Jackson JS20 and a Jackson DK2, amongst others....

How about a liquid rubbing compound? It was done over a guitar with clear, right?

I would test a spot with mineral spirits a few times to see if it will break it down.Keep the rag clean as you do it and yes you will need lots of rags.
Citrus based cleaners work on some paint markers but not all.Try it and see.
Whatever you do don't sand on it at this point.
