  • Simple and quick way to deaden Floyd spring reverb

I have seen many different ways to deaden the vibration of the springs to a Floyd. From foam, to cotton balls, to paper napkins, tissue paper, etc..

I thought I would share how I do it on my Floyd's that doesn't interfere with the operation of the floyd, and doesn't get caught between the spring wounds. What's awesome about doing it this way, is that you can install it when the springs are on the guitar tuned up, or with the springs out of the guitar...

First, I made a little hook tool by cutting a piece of wire coat hanger, then making a really small loop on one end with some needle nose pliers...

Then, you take the tool you just made, and push the looped end into the spring grabbing one end of rubber band with the hook...

Hold the other end of the rubber band, and pull the rubber band through the spring making sure to not pull it through all the way so that you have rubber band at each end of the spring.

Now, remove the hook tool and install the spring!

I've done this to every Floyd equipped guitar for years, and never had the bands slip out and it completely deadens the springs. The bands I use are called #64 that are 3 1/2" X 1/4"...

The rubber bands grip the inside of the spring so they don't move at all, but if you are worried about it sliding out, you can loop each end to the spring ends and then place the spring on the guitar so that it holds the band in place...

I don't really know how to take that.. sniff sniff.. I'd write some snide remark, but I have to wipe the tears from my eyes!

Actually, I guess I could patent my invention... 'Tremelo Spring Isolator Belts'. Then it wouldn't be Ghetto.. it would be the product everyone uses. I could even have different designs on the special customized isolator belts.. hmmm...

I ordered some noiseless springs a few days ago (haven't gotten them yet) for one of my guitars. I tried your idea for now and what do you know, it works. I've seen allot of different methods but didn't have the material just laying around. I did have rubber bands though.

+1 surgical tubing really damps it well because of all the contact.
