  • Duncan Invader in an alder guitar?

I'm thinking of replacing the JB in one of my alder DK2Ms with an Invader, as I've had excellent results with Invaders in basswood and ash guitars. I have other JB-equipped guitars (all basswood) that I could put the Invader in, but I already know how that sounds.

Anyone using an Invader in alder?

Nope, but I plan to put Invaders back in my WR1's.

Isn't an invader just a JB with big honkin' pole screws? I'd imagine they are close in sound in a lot of ways.

The Invader has more bass to it.

I used to have a tiger-striped SD-era Charvie with an Invader in it. Was probably alder or maybe poplar-bodied. I hated the pickup's tone. (Which, IMHO, is nothing like the tone of a JB at all.) Way too muddy for my tastes. Then again, I'm not a fan of the Invader at all, so take that with a grain of salt.

            No.

Same coils, but an Invader has 3 ceramic magnets. The JB has 1 Alnico 5.

If you have any issues adjust the hight until it sounds right.

I've got one in the Halford (basswood) and a 7-string version in a DX7 (not sure of the wood). Sounds different in each one, in a good way.

I say try it. If it doesn't sound right, you can always remove it. Just use alligator clips to hook it up while you test the sound - save on solder hassle.

That's basswood? I thought it was alder. Then again, it's been so long since I owned it...

Ah, yeah, I think you're right. It's the newer ones (no afterburner, 2 knobs, 3-way toggle) that are/were basswood.

In that event, the Invader kicks ass in alder.

However, it's more of an Explorer/Star shape, which is tonally different to a Strat shape. Not to mention the 3 pounds of metal

Upon further consideration, given the fact that basswood dents easily, and it was a pita to get those spikes and stuff pounded into the wood, I'm further inclined to agree it's alder

I changed my mind on this a little. I'm still doing the Invader-in-alder combination, but instead putting it in a Soloist Pro that currently has a Full Shred. To continue the tradition of trying a new combination, I'm then putting the Full Shred into a basswood Dinky XL that currently has a JB.

You do realize that with a Soloist the pickups and bridge are not bolted to the alder wings but the maple slab between them. Because of this you get more of the sound of a maple body than an alder body.

That's brilliant, and I gave myself a forehead slap for not having thought of it! Simplistic, and effective for sure.
