  • Charvel project help.

Im constructing what will basically be a white Model 1a with a single humbucker (ala Eddie Van halens VH1) using a model 1 neck and a alder strat body (which hasnt been drilled for a trem yet)

Ive got everything except a tremolo and pickguard and i need a bit of help deciding.

which of these trems should i get? (i will be replacing the blocks with steel ones)

As for pickguards, i cant decide between 1 ply or 3 ply, the guitar body is close to olympic white in color (even though i ordered 'alpine white') and i will be sanding the PG to be matte black.

what would look better 1 or 3 ply?

If you are going to be replacing the block, why not just get the entire bridge from Callaham? See if he can do one in black.

    Pickguard? 3 Ply I guess.

Have you done research and looked at lots of pictures of the axe you are trying to create? I'm making a Dave Murray strat and I know for a fact I need a 1 ply white pickguard (already sourced) cream PAF and Super D, Chrome Floyd, black H-S-H strat body, maple neck with a Floyd shelf, etc.

It is a lot cheaper for me to just buy the block separately.

Im not really trying to copy any one guitar, I had the neck laying around so i just decided to put something together.

I would go single ply, and try to find a Bakelite Strat PG off Ebay or somewhere else online...I believe they are already Matte Black.

Not sure on the bridge, but I see that one was listed by Bitterroot Guitars out of Michigan...I ordered some parts from them while building my Tele.
I can tell you for sure they are reliable, and fast shipping if that's the route you take...

        Good luck!

this place has the exact dimensions (and correct screw holes) to many pickguards, charvels included: http://www.pickguards.us/pricecharvel.html you would need pattern 125a and single ply (which is their group "a").

It isnt a charvel body, it is a strat one.

I think i will just get the 3 ply and see if i like it, but i still dont know about the trem though...

I have a chrome Gotoh Vtrem that i was going to use to test the guitar, but i dont want to drill the holes for it in case i buy an import spaced trem.

Well i ended up buying a 3 ply PG, i should have got 1 ply as it wont fit because of the 22nd fret overhang. i will have to cut it down so it fits properly.

also i just had a look at the PAF pro i was planning on using and a few wires have detached (it is from the 80's and i had to attach more wire since whoever had it before me cut them too short.)
