  • What do you do to a finished bolt on neck to get rid of that stickyness?

What is the general rule on removing that sticky film?

    000 steel wool?

    Superfine sandpaper?

What do you need to treat it with when you are finished as well?

It depends on what it is painted with. If it is lacquer, then I will clean with a paper towel and naphtha.

If it is poly, then I let it get good and greasy, and I never really clean it, just kind of wipe it off with a soft cloth (with no chemicals.)

Dirty lacquer necks are sticky and nasty.

Clean poly necks are sticky and nasty.

I find that 000 steel wool can leave some ugly blackish residue in the wood due to steel shavings getting embedded in the grain. This shit is nearly impossible to get rid of so your best bet is to get some fine grit sandpaper (1000+) and work your way up finer grits to get it nice and smooth. Once the lacquer is off completely and the neck is nice and smooth, whipe it down with some naphtha or ethanol and gun stock oil that fucker good.

0000 steel wool is the way to go on satin clearcoat or oil finish. Don't press too hard or use too quick movement to avoid any discoloration. For painted (poly) necks I use normal car wax. It keeps the neck nice and slippery.

i would use 1000 grit sandpaper to gently remove the sticky film w/o removing the finish. it will feel smooth but still have the wood protected. also, go up and down the neck. you don't want to go against the wood grain.

+1 on the 0000 steel wool. wipe lightly up and down the back of the neck. then wipe with a polish cloth. should be good to go.
