  • Stupid question perhaps but here goes............

Why are acoustic guitar fretboards always rosewood and never say maple?

    hmnn, interesting.

My guess it probably has to do with balance in tone with the rest of the woods which are usually light weight resonant woods, and maybe just looks in general? A steel string acoustic with a maple fretboard would probably be quite spanky and bright sounding as they are already bright as is, tho there's probably acoustics out there with ebony boards??

I've seen this asked on other boards, there are several examples of maple boards and, at least according to others, they sound fine. From reading a bunch of them, it almost seems the answer is just tradition.

I don't think the dirty maple board look has quite the appeal on an acoustic as it does, say, on a tele.
