  • Licensed Floyd Rose Question

So the other day i come across a very interesting licensed Floyd rose bridge that my Luthier gave to me. The strings would appear to go through the middle of the locking bolts? It doesn't look the speedloaders I have seen

I had a Kahler Floyd like that. Not double locking = not as good.

My low-end 1999 RG has a single lock trem like this:

You just insert the strings through the bolts and the ball holds them in place, like a string-through. Locks normally at the nut. I think it holds tuning ok, but a real floyd holds and feels better. Never really abused a trem though, so YMMV.

Yep, that's similar to what was known as a Floyd Rose 3.

There was a Floyd Rose 2 before that which was also single-locking from the mid '80s.

Schaller eventually changed the Floyd II into double-locking which is like their own Schaller version.

Single locking is not bad, per se. However, you have to stretch the strings unlike with a double locking setup.

And soldering the ball ends of the strings will also help, just some people do on a Kahler, to help stay in tune better.

Toejam, are you saying to completely fill the ball end with solder?

Just the part of the string that wraps around the ball.

I have a schaller baseplate style, single locking, no name trem on my warslinger that holds tune amazingly but outside of mine, I haven't heard very good things about them.
