    Do they have to be installed facing the opposite way from each other or does it not matter?

    the screw side usually goes on the outside. that usually keeps the coils in phase with each other.

      Simple placement of the pickups direction will have no effect on the "phase" of the pickup. The only way to create an out of phase sound when using two pickups is to have the pickups electronically out of phase or magnetically out of phase.

      The direction of the pickup may affect the sound of the pickup if the coils are not balanced. In this case altering the direction may add more treble or bass response.

        +1. You can also order them from Duncan or DiMarzio and specify which coil you want a certain color.
