  • Build Your Own Electric Guitar!! 5 Day Class with Mike Learn

Learn Lutherie!! Build Your Own Electric Guitar in a 5 Day Class with Mike Learn!!
The 2010 Seminar Schedule is shaping up and we have just added a new Guitar-Building class. Mike is offering another 5-day, action-packed, non-stop, wood-working extravaganza at his Colorado Studio. During this course you will build your own dream electric guitar!

The class project will be a traditional stratocaster-style* solid body with bolt on neck, however throughout the week Mike will demo dozens of different techniques and construction options. You will have your choice of body woods (based on what Mike is able to collect), a rosewood or maple fingerboard, maple neck and a wide variety of hardware options to tailor the sound to your specific liking. Each student will design a custom headstock and truss rod cover to make your project truly unique! You will also learn to route your guitar to hold the hardware and pick up(s) configuration of your choice.

    * Last year we allowed a wide range of body shapes and it tended to drive the dynamics of the class and slowed things down a bit. This year Mike is "hesitantly open-minded" on shape diversity. Alternate design decisions will be made on a one-on-one basis.

    You will learn:
    • how a guitar works
    • the basic geometry of an instrument and how to be creative within these guidelines
    • how to apply your knowledge to plan your instrument
    • how to choose good tonal wood
    • techniques for solid, chambered and semi hollow bodies
    • how to work with patterns and jigs
    • complete fret work
    • set up
    • wiring
    • how to choose your hardware (what works with what and why)
    • how to finish your instrument with natural wood or custom paint options
    • and much much more!!

We will supply all materials to build the body, neck and fingerboards including fret wire and truss rods. You will need to provide your bridge, pickup(s), hardware, tuners and strings. We will also provide a 3-Ring binder full of information, charts, notes and instructions to detail your process and allow you to duplicate it on your own.

Due to the time frame, we will not be able to complete a custom paint job on the guitar. You can choose a natural wood finish, or go home with a guitar primed and ready for paint.

Dates: Wednesday June 9 - Sunday June 13
    Time: 9 - 6 PM daily
Location: Mike's studio in Boulder County CO

Seats in this class are VERY limited - we can only accept 5 students. The cost of the course is $1250. If you are ready to reserve a seat, or if you have any further questions, please contact me.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions at all. Matt has already asked just about everyone possible. We look forward to having a small group of enthusiasts. We have two seats left since a buddy of mine had to back out.
