  • Disguisted with EMG's new setup

Is anybody else disgusted with EMG's new solderless setup? I got a brand new set of 81 & 60 today to put in my brand new RR5 and I've never cussed so much working on a guitar yet. Where in the hell do they expect you to put that huge junction solder less block at along with 3 pots, a switch, and a 9 volt battery in the cavity. I am most certainly not routing a hole in the back since its a clean back so in the cavity the battery stays. I got so ticked off I cut all the quick connect BS off and grabbed a spare 25k tone pot I had left over and started to wire that in. Now I have to wait for two more 25K A taper pots to arrive before I can finish. They still have the slots to solder on the pots but its such a f'n waste to try and solder them on there.

Anybody else dealt with the BS? Its a good idea but has flaws to it.

So ticked off my fingers got away from what my mind wanted to say

So the place that I order the two 25K audio taper pots from are f'n back ordered So I had to jump through another hurdle to get the beautiful (less than a week in my possession) RR5 back in playing condition. One day..

Ok, I'm really not seeing a problem. You connect each wire to where the pictures show, and stick the main board against the cavity wall. Did they include a 3M double-stick strip? Got any bubble gum?

Yeah it could easily be done. But the wires will still have to modified and extended to reach the input jack on the bottom side of the upper wing and you'd have to solder the wires to the switch. So it truly wouldn't be solderless. I'm sure you'd lose some type of tone with the wires being run and looped around that way rather than straight soldered to the pots/switches/jack. For the jack they want you to just slip on a female connector over the male plug.. how much of a pain would it be if somebody forgot to somewhat "crimp" the end on the jack and have it keep slipping off.

Its already going to be a pain trying to fit the 9 volt in w/out hitting the tone pot. It was a big enough pain doing it to my RR1 until I had a battery box installed. I just don't to go through another hassle of the wires being way to long and trying to cram them into the RR5 cavity along with the complied junction box from hell. It comes with velcro to secure it. I'm sure it'd be a great thing for people who can't solder but for me its a hassle.

It's not that bad...I was able to fit a David Gilmour set (3 singles w/ EXG Expander and SPC Presence Controls) plus battery in a standard strat rout with no modification. http://www.jcfonline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104987

AH, I forgot about the wing-mounted Rhoads jack. That might be an issue since EMG usually targets "everything close together" models.

However, I've not seen evidence that push-on/non-solder connections do not transfer signal as well as soldered joints. If you "forgot" to crimp the ends, that's your fault, not theirs. You pay for your mistakes, not lay blame on someone else.

And I have never had trouble stuffing a foam-wrapped battery into a San Dimas-style route (RR, Warrior, KV, etc). Yeah it's a bit snug, but nothing's being physically crushed. You just have to make sure it's not pushing against the cavity cover too hard or it'll strip the screw holes.
Turn it on its side. You might have to rotate the pots so the prongs are more towards the inner wall and thus giving more room, but that's no big deal.

If worse comes to worse, get a chisel and notch out a little cavity for the battery to kinda sorta sink into on the outer wall. It's just an RR5.

Wow I think those things look pretty cool. My only issue would be not being able to shorten the wires for a custom fit.

I wish all pickup makers would agree on a common connection. I'd love to be able to pop out my JB and throw in a ToneZone without even opening up the back.
