I just got one of the burnz-o-matic butane ones and it is really a PITA. Doesn't work that well as a soldering iron.

I'm very happy with my 20/40W iron from Radio Shack. I would think that flames near electronics = bad.

That one looks like it would be too weak to tackle guitar electronics though.

My vote is for a proper, old-school 30W iron.

Ok I am not taking a vote or looking for opinions on the matter, I am looking for real world experience. People who own and use them for the thing that we as guitar players who work on our own stuff would use them for.

I am not trying to be an ass just want real answers, thats all.

I don't recall the model of my friend's, but, I used it to wire up a guitar at his house and it was great EXCEPT for the tremolo claw ground and soldering the backs of the pots.

For small stuff, it pretty much rocks, but we did have to break out the soldering gun for the bigger items.

I had a 15W iron and all it did was make crappy joints and burn up potentiometers.

Hey Jazz was that a butane or a battery operated iron?

I've had this one or the equivalent for the past few years. 20W will do you fine for pot terminals and switch terminals, but you need at least 40W for the backs of pots and trem claws. Buy some extra tips and you're golden.
