  • Tuner size/type replacement question

A few years ago, I bought a maple strat head neck from Warmoth - one that was an on-line special that was already done.

It said it was routed for Kluson tuners - you know the ones that came on Fender strats back in the 1700s : ) So I bought a cheap set of those, and they fit.

I'd like to replace them with more of a Gotoh or Shaller tuner, but I don't think the 'normal' size ones will fit. I have a set for a nother neck, and they are too large in diameter to fit in the holes.

Any ideas? Will the "mini" Gotohs or "mini" shallers work? thanks.

The Gotohs & Schaller minis are 10mm (13/32") and vintage Kluson is 8.75mm (11/32"). A few manufacturers make Kluson-style replacements with higher ratios that work better, but I think they all still have that vintage look. Another option is to drill the holes out 1/16" bigger and put the tuners you want in.
