  • Sully or anyone thats done dye some Qs

Have a gorgeous JTX body that is stripped raw I am snaggin tomorrow. Where would I locate the dye that you used on the sullycaster? Do you seal the grain first or after the dye? Sand after the grain raises and redye?

What do you suggest as a clear. Nitro?

Just looking to get into this. Have painted plenty and have a decent handle on those. The grain on this axe is too nice to cover up@

I get my dyes from LMI. Here's a link to the waterbased dyes.
They're applied directly to the wood. Since the body you're using has been chemically stripped, who knows how the wood is going to absorb dye applied directly to it, so you may be better off with the alcohol soluble dyes. Those are (often) shot with spray guns and can be mixed with clear coat. For what you're doing, you may be best sealing the body, shooting the dye, then clearing it. Here's a good tutorial that should help.

I'm using nitro right now, but will most likely be going back to automotive urethanes in the near future.

Hmm well I have about 2 gallons of urethane clear so I may stick with that.
      Thanks so much!
