  • SD or DiMarzio?

Okay for my JS30WR project... to upgrade the pups I was thinking about an Invader in the bridge and a Full Shred in the neck. But then I did some research and am now considering an X2N in the bridge and Humbucker from Hell in the neck. I know the HFH is a "vintage output" pup but I like a sparkling clean tone with the neck pup and wicked pinch harmonics and crunch hence the X2N. Thoughts?

The HFH is not necessarily "vintage output." It is a humbucker designed to sound like a single coil.

personally I think the invader is muddy and the x2n is very hot but doesn't have a lot of character with the eq being pretty even. the tone zone and the SD custom are my favorite bridge pickups. for the Neck I like the SD 59 and the Dimarzio air norton.

Get two guitars, then put SD's in one and Dimarzio's in the other. It's what I did. I'm after a third guitar now so I can put EMG's in it, preferably with the 18v mod switchable to 9v.

This guy already said what I think.

Except I've never tried the X2N, or the Air Norton (though I've heard good things about the Air Norton.)

          But the Invader, it sucks.

IMO, the Custom cannot be beaten in the bridge. Unless it's by a Tone Zone.

For the neck, I like the '59 and the Jazz (Jazz is great if you want a good clean tone) in the Duncans and I did like the DiMarzio PAF 36th Anniversary I had in my white Charvel.

Hmmm... what about a DiMarzio D-Activator X set?

Or hell maybe I'll just go with EMGs although I'd probably go for the 81X in the bridge and a 60X in the neck if I went active.

I'd go with the Invader in the bridge and a Full Shred in the neck. that'll have a really good "metal" sound.
but i really love the DiMarzio Super Distortion / PAF combination in any guitar. its more vintage but classic goodness just can't be beat.

Actually I think I am going to go active... EMGs the all new X series 81/60. Yes I want to sound like all the dudes that use EMGs and screw my own "tone" hehe!

I'm a Seymour Duncan fanboy, but I have to say in a guitar like this the DiMarzio Super Distortion/PAF* set would rock like fuck.

My favorite combo has always been JB in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck.

Well my DXMGT neck didn't work out so I am going to sell it for what I paid ($185) and get the EMG Zakk Wylde set. Just good ole 81/85. I'm sure it will be a noticeable difference from my Jackson pups.
