  • 87 Jackson NAMM - deal?

I have an opportunity to purchase a 1987 Jackson NAMM with a Grover Jackson wanted paint scheme. It's a dinky style with a bolt on neck. Has paint work on the front, pickups and back of the guitar.

Its in mint condition with the case and priced at $1200. Seems steep for a bolt in style, but I see NAMM Jacksons bringing in major prices. Is this a good deal?

    Thanks!

$1,200 is high for an average bolt-on of that era, but the condition and graphic adds value in that it is not one seen on a ton of guitars.
In fact it's the first time I've ever seen that one.
If it is in fact a NAMM guitar (verifiable), $1,200 is not bad.
Offer the seller $1k and see if they bite. You never know.

I kind of dig it, but don't have the scratch to buy it.

Thanks for the info man! Any idea how to verify if it's a NAMM?

I recall that one popping up several years ago. It wasn't being described as a NAMM guitar at the time. It's safe to say it's a one-off.

I have a mint 08 Jackson SL1 in burnt cherry I may do an even trade with him for it. Just want to be sure I'm not losing my shorts on the deal.

I like the uniqueness of the guitar and the pre production era Jacksons have a sense of enchantment to me . Really just want it to collect and not play (I have my Jackson players already) but curious if the value is and will be the same or better as a nice SL1. Considering my motive, Am I crazy for this deal or on point?

Huh? A pre-production Jackson would be called a Charvel. The first Jackson made for Randy Rhoads was in 1981.

A guitar built in 1987 is an Ontario era Jackson. It's production. Most were semi-custom built with the same base specs and then tweaked for each order.
Hell the plates were mixed up so bad that it could be an 88 or even an 89.
You would have to pull the neck or look in the trem cavity to find the exact date it was built.

A mint SL1 is worth more than this guitar.
If you trade, you better be getting some cash back on the deal.

I'm going to go with crazy. LOL I'd take the SL1 all day long over that guitar, especially in a nice flame top finish. Both as a player and from a value perspectives. And the collector value of that other guitar is not especially choice. Those early Ontario guitars are great players, but not exactly high on collectors' desirability lists. I would say they're undervalued in the market, even.

Also, the "it's a NAMM guitar" is a too-common cheeseball ploy by some to try to talk up values. Difficult, if not impossible, to verify for that era. And I question whether the graphic is even original to the guitar. Red flags, IMHO. Better pics and info would be needed.

Bottom line: were I you, I'd be happily keeping the SL1 and walking away.

I agree, no hang tag, no verification, no way. Could be a mutt, for all you know. Not trying to sound like a dick, lol.

It's OK as far as pencil sketches go, a bit cheesy. I like the gargoyles better. The graphic covers the back of the body which is pretty cool.

It actually does have a hangtag still. No mention of NAMM, but does say wanted poster paint theme. Would that verify its a NAMM or would it be built by someone particular?

It's a full Strat body and not a Dinky. Very cool.

Email Grover with a picture and ask? If it's got his face on it he might remember. lol
