  • New Soloist Day!

Start right off with the money shot -

So I knew it would happen. I have zero history with Soloists up until 3 weeks ago or so when I bought an import X series Soloist because it was cheap and green and it played really great. I fell in love with it and of course, had to upgrade ASAP! So after looking at some of the different Soloists that were out there I decided on one of the models at the Music Zoo. One because it looked cool and two because the proximity to home would let me easily trade in a guitar to keep my stack of guitars manageable.

So I went out to the zoo today and checked out a few models and this one just smoked me even though another finish they had there was very cool and also a monster player. Anyway walked out with this one and am very happy indeed. Basically a modern soloist with a small headstock, top mount Floyd, moved back knobs and killer old style script logo.

All in all a great guitar. I love the feel. The neck is about the size of my Gibson slim taper 60's style necks. Very similar to the ones on my SG or my Model 3 Charvel neck. Definately bigger than the import soloist and my Adrian Smith. But still thin. Sound is balanced - not to bright and not to dark. Weight is heavier than the import soloist - something in 8 1/2 range I think the specs said. The import must have been 7. I love the brass knobs and the control layout. The fretboard is not uber black, there's some brown in it and some pores in the wood.

Now how does this Custom Shop Soloist compare to the import mode that got me here. Honestly, they both play about the same and sound great. The import soloists rosewood board is rougher and drags on you fingers more. That's about it from playability. From construction standpoint this one is second to none in fit and finish. Really nice. Ivoriod binding is tops and the fretwork is perfect.

    Anyway enjoy the pics.

That's awesome, and as usual, great pics!

I think TMZ and Jackson hit the nail pretty much on the head with the later SL2H-Vs. The ugly-ass crown tuners on the first runs were a misstep IMO but once they ditched those, they have a pretty damn cool guitar.

I played the white and yellow bengals they had as well. The yellow Bengal was also a monster. I was torn between the two. The finish on the yellow was very very cool because it bursted to orange down the center under the black. Maybe they're all like that? I don't know. Anyway, if you're inclined, go for that one it will not disappoint.

Wow, it doesn't get better than that.

...well, it could have been a KV, but for a Soloist...

Seriously though, love the non-recessed Floyd and the color. Awesome guitar!

                      Love it!
I <3 top mount FR. All of my soloists except one (my first) are in that configuration.

Nice! I hope it wasn't a windy day. I don't think I could handle putting one of mine on a ledge like that

is that a top mount floyd I spy? is the neck slightly tilted back?
