  • Did Jackson start using thinner fret wire on their soloists?

I've been looking at some recent builds for sale on EBay and it looks like the fret wire is a lot thinner looking to me than it used to be?
am I imagining this or did they change the fret wire on their USA soloists?
If this is our perdition, will you walk with me?

Doesn't look especially thin on my two recent JCS guitars. And more importantly, it doesn't feel any different..

the fret wire on this looks quite a bit thinner to me than on any of my older Jacksons (may be as tall but definitely thinner looking frets)

It looks like the frets are highly polished... so maybe they appear a bit different because of that? I dunno.

No, the modern era Soloists are still using the jumbo fret wire (6500?) as they have since the early days. You really can't tell from a picture on an auction. But go to your local shop and sample a few of the new ones, you'll see, they're just as meaty and big as ever.

            I'm hoping it's still 6100 wire

ive always thought that depended on the work orders ? , i know on like over a dozen ive owned , on the work orders that was included , along with all the specs of the guitar being built ,. i know the old ones all were built to the exact orders of the buyer ? , althogh ive seen some mistake's , sometimes for the better hahahahaha , my jackson soloist J 0303 , was custom ordered all the way , jumbo frets, n/b neck, all the details were done as it is on the build sheet , was orig a 1 hum , now 3 , but the rest is orig , o yea a kill switch also added by me , 6100 i belive is the normal , but you can always order whatever you wanted ? , that may have changed ? , i hope not , see ya , alz / 2015 \m/

Of course on a Custom Shop you could specify the fret wire, but the OP is talking about USA Production, and they have always come with jumbo wire as standard. In fact, most Custom Shop guitars do too, that is one area many players always choose as jumbo wire.

Well, except for production KVs. USA Select KVs have the thinner "medium" jumbos.

80s Rhoads had small frets unless otherwise specified by the customer

Nowadays Soloists Rhoads etc have 6100s....King Vs have medium frets

I was under the impression the KE2 also has medium fretwire?

My 2011 SL2H definitely has jumbo.

No, KE2s have full jumbos, too.

Hmmm, the frets in that picture you've posted look like jumbo to me. I can kinda see what you mean but I think it's an optical illusion; they're too wide to be medium.

The medium I have on my soloist look as follows:
