  • 2004 Jackson Relic Rhoads

Hello everyone. I am new to your forum. I mainly own ESP and Tom Anderson guitars but recently picked up a Jackson Relic Rhoads. From my research it is a one-off from the 2004 NAMM show. While researching the guitar, I actually found it in one of your forum threads that is archived: http://www.jcfonline.com/archive/index.php/t-3553.html . It matches the guitar described in the thread, including the serial number, but there is no Mike Shannon autograph on the back of the headstock.

I would like to find out more about this guitar so wondered if anyone still here is familar with it. From the sparse details the seller had it was a one off NAMM piece. He said he had a lot of interest in it from some famous guitarists but did not indicate who. Upon arrival I called Jackson but their information was somewhat mixed. The guy I talked to was totally amped up about the guitar and how great it was and wished he had it. He was able to give me some details I was looking for like the pickup models and confirmed it was built in 2004. He said it would be worth a lot but said the price was too high to even guesstimate at an MSRP. He indicated the costs for materials on their build sheet was >$2K. He also stated it was built by Grover Jackson.

I am not that familiar with Jackson guitars but picked it up because it looked like an interesting piece and I liked the old school features like the brass bridge, older style script logo, nibs over fretwire, G&G case, etc. Plus because it was reliced, I didn't feel scared to bash the tips in.

Can anyone share additional details on this piece. My understanding is it is modeled after a 1982 owned by Mike Shannon but I don't know if the mimicry includes the relicing.

I might try contacting Jackson again to see if they can send me any sort of summary on the instrument.

Thanks a lot. I will be most appreciative of any help I can get

MSRP on those, if I recall correctly was in the $6-$8k range. They were unrealistically priced by FMIC. Grover Jackson did not build it. He hasn't been with Jackson for decades. It is a really nice Jackson that was dragged along the ground, had stuff thrown at it or hammered against them and they charged an extra $2-ish for them.

Shortly after FMIC took over Jackson, they experimented with several different things... They did a few small runs of Charvel stratheads, a few distressed guitars including that Rhoads, Jenna Jameson endorsement lol...

There's not really a whole lot to say other than that was a one off CS guitar made for potential fans of distressed guitars. Unlike the Fender purists, we don't really care much for factory distressed stuff. At least we don't see additional value for what a good year's worth of rehearsal will do. lol

Welcome to the forum. There are a few of us ESP fans as well!

Thanks for the info Xeno. I paid 30-40% of the price you listed at the top. The guitar appears to be new and has an unfilled warranty card. INot being a Jackson follower, I was unaware Grover was no longer with the company so only going with what the rep on the phone from Jackson told me. Maybe he meant to say Mike Shannon. Regardless I think I got a good deal on it so no complaints there, just wanted to find out more about the history of it.

I actually bought the guitar to convert into a tribute to Kirk Hammett's Rhoads by dropping in an EMG H and 81. Since the guitar was reliced it looks more like his actual one which has some similar looking damage. BTW, I am flying to SFO tomorrow morning to check out Kirk's monster series ESPs that are on display at the airport!

Agreed Grover Jackson did NOT build that Rhoads....however Grover WAS back w/Jackder briefly (hence the Grover Jackson Legacy guitars)

Yeah, your guitar was most likely built by Mike Shannon. Pretty much the guru luthier of Jackson. CS NAMM guitar like you said.

I sounded a bit harsh on the guitar, but it should be a fine representation of what a Jackson custom should be. I'm sure it's awesome!

And I've never played a 22 fret Rhoads. Always wanted one.

Thanks guys for the welcome and the info. it does play and sound pretty awesome. My plan now is to put some EMGs in it. Looks like 3rd time is a charm. I am actually getting used to the shape after previously owning a lower end Rhoads in the early 2000s (the one with the red flame top, reverse headstock and satin hardware), and an ice blue custom shop RR1T earlier this year.

If anyone is inerested, I was over in San Fran Tues morning to take some pictures of the Kirk Hammett Monster ESPs on display at the airport. I would be happy to post the pics here but didn't want to clog up a Jackson board with ESP pics and piss people off, haha. Didn't know if that would be a faux pas that would be frowned upon.

Iceberg, I have never seen one for sale loose but maybe if you call Jackson they can either sell you one or tell you where to find one.

The funny thing is I don't like buying used guitars with damage but a reliced guitar doesn't phase me in the least. I guess it might also fill a niche for people like me. This is actually my second, I also have an ESP KH-2 Vintage.

You can post them in the Guitars By Other Manufacturers section. I'm sure quite a few people here would love to see them. Welcome to the forum, and nice Rhoads!

Thanks for the suggestion. I posted them there although since I am new, they probably won't show up until tomorrow.

I just took care of it for you. For some reason, certain new posts need to be approved by an admin since the board was upgraded earlier in the year, and I don't know why exactly.

Thanks a lot. Seems like it's only posts with images. The others seems to populate automatically.

No prob. Might be some type of filter that tries to block spam or something.
