  • 1986 Jackson USA Strat Serial #2422

    Hi folks,

I am new to the forum and was hoping someone could give me an estimate on what my Jackson guitar was worth as I am looking to sell it. I am the original owner, and purchased it in early 1987 from the Guitar Center in Torrance, CA (now located in Lawndale, CA) for $1250. The date hand written in the neck pocket is Sept 26, 1986. The neck was custom built by Jim Foote of Music Works in Hermosa Beach, CA within 6 months after purchasing the guitar. It's a 24 fret unfinished maple with reverse headstock and jumbo frets. I don't know what the fretboard radius is but feels like 14". Unfortunately, after many moves, I do not have the original neck which I know will be a problem for many. It has a Kahler tremolo and stock pickup. Pics are attached! If anyone has a ballpark estimate on what would be a fair asking price for this guitar, I would very much appreciate the input.

    Thanks in advance,

    Jason

Kahler + non-original neck + Ontario-era build means you'll be lucky to get $400 for it in this market.

Yeah, I was gonna say $500.
      96xxxxx, 97xxxxx and 98xxxxx serials oftentimes don't indicate '96, '97 and '98.

Was the neck pocket modified to accommodate a deeper route for that 24 fret neck?

Judging by the pics, that neck pocket was altered so that a 24 fret neck would work.
This means even if you found the original neck, it would never fit.

If you look real close, those last two frets are 'overhang'. So, it is quite possible that an original neck would still fit.

And you guys saying $400 and 500, you guys are way more generous than I would be.
Ultimately, you are buying a body with a Kahler. Do you think that is worth $400 with that plain finish?

Thank you all very much for the feedback. Yes, the neck pocket was modified to fit the new neck. I think I will just hang on to it.

I'll bet those upper two frets are hard to get to.

Hard to get to on a 22 fret Jackson Strat..

If it's a player, keep it... the resale value is low, but that doesn't mean it isn't a killer guitar.

Thank you, it definitely plays very well. I'm able to keep the action at 0.8 mm with negligible and zero fret out. I appreciate the kind words.

Look closer. If you mount a 22 fret neck back on there -like the original was - it will now have a big empty hole in the body at the butt end of the neck, where the neck pocket was extended to accommodate that 24 fret neck's longer heel.
