  • Mini rec vs single rec

In every youtube comparison I've heard I seem to prefer the single/dual rec over the 6505. In videos of single/dual, I generally prefer the single, and in mini/dual I seem to prefer the mini. Id like to grab one and see for myself if i like it that much more. Cant seem to locate any single vs mini videos Can't travel to mesa dealer (don't make singles anymore anyway) and have never seen either in person so would have to order, prob go used. Mini seems to be going for around 700 with some warranty left and single solo around 850.

    Thoughts on either of these?

As reference generally running 6505+ 112 with post around 9-10 o'clock and pre around noon, eqs all around noon ish give or take, resonance around 2-3 o'clock

The mini has EL84 power tubes. My experience is that those tubes just do NOT stay tight and clear and pushed volumes. The way they break up is unmusical to my ears. The single runs 6L6 tubes. Those stay nice and tight at higher volumes. The other thing is that the mini is 25 watts, you will lose headroom quicker which makes for sloppy palm mutes. The single is 50 watts. Plenty of headroom in that amp for good, tight chugs that retain clarity.
    GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

    and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Yeah I don't have much experience with anything other than 6l6s, I've played a dark terror but that's a totally different amp so I thought it would be good to ask. My brain was telling me single just because it has more going on. The mini would be awesome just because it's mini lol

I like it to have a nice defined punch, if I'm understanding correctly, I wouldn't get that as much with the mini since the EL84s break up sooner?

At the same time I think I like that the recs sound a little more loose. I don't want real loose tho

Have you tried an EQ with the volume cut in the loop on the 6505?
If I had to pick between mini and single I would go single. I sold a single for $650 not to long ago so if you keep your eyes open there are good deals.

I have not tried that. Ordering a new cab as well, v30s seem to sort out the mids a bit for more clarity. Plus give me a proper cab and comparison platform.

Been eyeing source audio eq for a while..will have to wait for buffer zone with the girlfriend if I'm gonna get anything else, let it slip to the back of her mind or sacrifices (the guitar herd) will have to be made. Lol

I picked up a rectoverb 50 last year it's great. I'm running it thru an old mesa half back vertical 2x12 (EVM and a C90) sounds great. I think the cab really helps the clean channel and tightens up the gain channel compared to the recto V30 cabs. I have a low watt amp w EL84s too it's good but I like 6L6s better, even when I had marshalls I'd have them modded for 6l6/5881s just prefer the thumpier tightness over the EL34 mids and smoothness.

Actually just going to get an avatar contemporary 212. Love the mesa vertical but too pricey for me. I keep hearing good things about evm c90 combo as well, will have to try it at some point.

I had honestly not heard of the single rectifier until recently. My impression from what I have heard on youtube is that I've been missing out

I found mine on CL for like $300. They're heavy but worth it, I have an egnator 1-12 cab swapped an EVM classic in it for home use and it's great. Huge difference over the celestion that was in there for a single 12 it's loud.
