  • Floyd Rose Locking Nut Adapter??

    Hi all,

I have a 1987 USA soloist that came with a top-mounted floyd nut on it. The guy made a brass adapter that holds the floyd lock nut flat against the headstock. I love this! I feel like it makes the neck vibrate slightly more. I just got a 1987 custom soloist (fat neck) that has the original JT-6 lock nut on it. I removed the piece of pickguard that sits under the nut and it seems to resonate slightly better. Does anyone on this site know where I can get one of these adapters?

I'm thinking maybe someone on here might have had some made by a machinist (I assume it would be cheaper to have a batch made than just one). Any help would be greatly appreciated. New here, so apologies if this is posted in wrong section.

I'd have to see a pic to know what you mean.

Sorry for the slack on getting pics up. I just created a photobucket account, so I'm assuming this link will get you there.

Pics are pretty bad, but you'll see a little brass bracket that sits between the headstock and the nut to keep it level. The original standard nut has been removed obviously. I'll try to get better pics soon. Thanks for looking!

Appears to be a custom made shim to raise the locking nut to the appropriate height (JT-6 string-lock required a taller nut) .... fretsonthenet could make these (if he already does not) ....

I'm not aware of any drop-in JT6 stringlock to OFR locknut adapters, these conversions are typically done by a luthier to have any chance of a good result.

Yeah, this is indeed a custom job. The guy I got the axe from was an auto mechanic so he had easy access to the tools needed to make one. I'll check with www.fretsonthenet.com and see if they can help the cause.

It's exactly what Blood Splatter says, just a shim to keep a floyd nut level against the back-slanted headstock.

I've heard these things mentioned in passing on a really old thread, so I wasn't sure how common they are. I think it's a pretty cool upgrade and appreciate the fact that you can easily put the guitar back to stock by gluing the nut back in and screwing in the original sting locks if you wanted to.

Will update post if I find a source for these or have some made. Thanks for the help!

Yup that's definately a custom made shelf. That's also not a Floyd nut. It's kahler's version of a locking nut. I had one on a Kahler Floyd strat years ago. Personally, I would bring the guitar to a tech and have a proper Floyd nut fitted professionally.

Yessir, its the nut from a Kahler Spyder. I think the spacing is slightly more narrow than the Floyd spacing. I could be wrong about that, but he was trying to put a more traditional floyd-style nut on there and the E strings were a little far towards the binding.

It works great and fits well. I do still need to make a new truss rod cover though. The whole thing looks more ghetto in that pic than it should without the truss rod cover.
