  • NPD! (How did I not get one of these before?)

So, was at the local music emporium talking to one of the counter guys when a gent came in asking about AC adapters for Boss pedals. The clerk found him one, and while doing so, found some "generic" adapters that were labelled for EH pedals. What was "odd" was that the adapters were 1/8" instead of barrel connectors. This set off a lightbulb in the clerk's head and he said "I bet these would work with that broken pedal". Broken pedal? I asked and it was a ProCo RAT. The 9v battery clip had an issue and the store thought they had no adapters to fit it, so it was marked down, and then marked down again, and finally came to rest at $15 "as is".

SO the adapter fit, and we took the pedal over to the nearest amp, a Fender Champ. Wow. Works like a charm. Foo Fighters tone right off the bat. A couple of twists and it was Sabbath-y, quite impressive actually. Everything from a low-medium gain through fuzz. I said "This is still $15? I'll take it!". With the adapter it was $21. Color me happy.

I now get what all the RAT pedal fuss was over. Never owned one, but had it modeled in almost every processor I owned back in the day.

The filter control is a high cut. I played an original rat through a carvin x100b and 4x12. It was a killer combination.

Yup. It's a pretty badass pedal. Been using it with my Crate Stealth. ...80's bliss!

I had a couple of rat pedals and have never liked any.

I never cared much for them either.

I have one of their White Face Rat reissue pedals sitting in my box neglected. It's a good sound but not as good as a Marshall.

It's taken me a while to get used to the tone of it, but in listening back to early Megadeth and Metallica, I can kinda hear where it sounds like they used one in some places (solos mostly).

Definitely a change from how my racks sound, as I tend to go for more of a "ready for mastering" sound where post-processing isn't needed and nothing has to be "mixed", just balanced.

Or at least I try to, anyway.
