Fake Maple top on PC1 ?

    Fake Maple top on PC1 ?

    I have a 7 or 8 year old "Red Rum" PC1 .
    I had a little accident and chipped off some of the red "finish" on the top . The red clear coat came off and you could see the quilt pattern in it , but not on the wood underneath. It was like a trick was done with the red clear coat ( or plastic is what it seems more like than a stain ) to make a quilt maple top . Underneath it looked like poplar not maple . I wonder if the back is really mahogany now .
    Anyone familiar with this ?

    Pics? I don't think they've ever used a foto flame on these, but the maple veneer they typically use is very thin. Is it possible you've chipped the wood off and not just the finish?

      Pics of the damage would help.
      Sounds like it was either a healthy chunk (took wood with it) or it was on a plain spot. The figuring will vary from 5A to almost non-existent.

      All genuine PC1 guitars have a 1/8" thick Maple top, not a veneer or photo flame.
      The backs are Koa on the early ones and Mahogany on the rest.
      The grade/quality depends on the finish used.
      The Au Natural typically get the best tops.
